DNA could bring justice at last

A year-old effort in Ohio to perform DNA testing on thousands of neglected evidence kits from old rape cases is yielding not only the expected breakthroughs in long-cold cases, but also an important bonus: a new determination by police to prosecute sexual-assault crimes whenever possible.

According to an analysis by theย Plain Dealerย of Cleveland, since Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine urged police departments in December 2011 to send in any testable kits for analysis at the stateโ€™s expense, his office has received more than 2,300 kits. Of those, 572 have been tested, and 65 matched DNA profiles on file, thus identifying suspects in those cases. Nearly 500 more are still in the testing process and have shown signs of male DNA.
