The Aloha State’s largest agricultural commodity is the seed crop but the future of that industry. . . is facing some foul weather.
“Seed crops” are the plants that grow the seeds that in turn are planted on farms across the country. Hawaii’s unique climate allows seed companies to plant throughout the year, which significantly speeds up the process of developing new seeds.

Groups like the Center for Food Safety, Babes Against Biotech and Hawaii SEED hinder the development of new seeds by making it much harder for Hawaiian farmers to grow. They focus on trying to scare the public and our legislators into thinking agricultural technology tools, like GMOs and pesticides, are unsafe.

Their willful ignorance of the truth hasn’t made their advocacy less effective though. And sadly, there are real consequences to their misguided activism, at a personal and policy level.

. . . [I]f these activists succeed at shutting down our farms, growers . . . in the Midwest will lose their seed supply. By attacking Hawaii, they threaten all of agriculture.
