Just like humans look for the good traits when choosing a partner for procreation, farmers should look for good seeds for better production.
Dr. Andrew Kiggundu, the head of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Center at the National Agricultural Research laboratories, Kawanda says the quality of seeds plays an important role in the final produce farmers’ harvest.
Kiggundu said this while presenting a paper on the seeds systems and genetic modified crops during an Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa OFAB dialogue.
He also called on farmers and policy makers to distinguish between vegetative crops, self-pollinating, cross pollinated crops. Each of these seeds can be genetically engineered but their reproduction processes are quite different.
Kiggundu said genetically modified (GM) crops are offering solutions to farmers. “GM crops are incorporated with resistance to pests and diseases and drought tolerance,” he boasted.
