‘Food Babe’ promotes misinformation on food, GMOs

|

Did you know that the calcium pill you may be popping contains the same chemical found in gravestones? What are these nasty food and drug companies trying to do? Poison us? What an outrage, right? Wrong! Calcium carbonate is an effective, safe calcium supplement, and calcium sulphate is a tried and true yeast nutrient.

This brings us to Vani Hari, an attractive young lady who under the moniker of the Food Babe aims to blow the whistle on brands of foods and beverages that in her very words “are trying to slowly poison us with cheap and harmful ingredients.”

Hari does not have any sort of degree in food science or chemistry, but that does not seem to be an impediment when it comes to telling us that “we are getting conned by cheap, toxic chocolate” or that our beer is chock full of “shocking ingredients” or that “butter is secretly ruining our health.” No, it isn’t because of the fat or the cholesterol in the butter, she says. It’s becuase of the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the corn or soy that the cows are fed.

It doesn’t take more than a quick perusal of Food Babe’s blog to reveal that she has no understanding of what genetic modification is all about.

Why isn’t Fraud Babe in prison for fraud yet?

    • Jurg Bangerter

I know you will never answer my question why USA and Canadian goverments health institutions fight any labeling of GMO’s because this would simply end all your arguments and the arguments of Monsanto and Co, labelling GMO’s in Europe had as result that you won’t find any GMO products on our shelves coz they don’t sell and most Europeans trust independant Swiss/Austrian/German research that GMO are harmful more than any US Monsanto sponsored FDA research done under a Monsanto=FDA CEO…your countries goverments are jokes…Canada and USA have to Nationalize their goverments again..your leaders are sad puppets of some Multis.

      • Maddie… yo

You are aware that every government agency in the EU approves of GMOs right? All have said they’re safe, as there are no peer-reviewed studies that say otherwise. The only reason they’re banned is because of politics.. Not science.

We don’t label for many reasons 1). There is already a label. 2). Because of a poorly educated consumer, this will result in a loss of money for the companies 3). It’s a process not an ingredient, it shouldn’t require any labeling.

You’re incredibly misinformed and I know that my response will go in one year and out the other, but perhaps it’s time to relax, collect your sources and look at the science. You can’t bring up these studies and not provide links.

        • Jurg Bangerter

You are aware that Italy has banned completely GMO farming punishable by 3-5 years prison as has Switzerland, Hungary, Holland and Luxembourg and also Russia..all this are EUropan countries…labeling gives consumers the choice and as its proven that ORGANIC FARMING HAS BIGGER YIELD by an UN study and that GMO farming doesn’t pollute environment, in Argentina toxic GMO farming has caused an cancer epidemie ..poorly educated consumer preventing labeling is BULLSHIT, loss of money for any company producing harmful GMO products is alright same goes for ASPARTAME laced products, politics..Monsanto heavely influences US politics since a former Monsanto CEO presides now FDA.so much about being ethically independant, also that your Norht American puppets of Monsanto attack rightful passed laws in Vermont and Europe shows that you are simply stupid or doing something usually called TAQQYA in the muslim faith where deceiving is part of this cult of death and finally yes Monsanto put greed abut citizens health and there isn’t any science behind their GMO CRAP

          • Kurt Kemmerer

So Italy does something crazy for political reasons, and that justifies your unjustifiable fear mongering on GMOs? You do know that Italy put scientists in prison because they didn’t predict an earthquake correctly, right? Yeah, Italy is not going to help you make your untenable argument.

          • Jurg Bangerter

Do the Swiss with the highest Nobel Prize per capita sound crazy as well such as the Italians? Perhabs uneducated since only in USA/Canada people believe man and dinosaur live din harmony, the Swiss don’t go for such religious BS? Switzerland is also Global Wealth and Innovation leader and has banned all GMO’s on its territory by democratic vote….also it has been proven organic Yiled is now bigger then GMO crap who loads you with toxins and pollutes with pesticides.

          • Kurt Kemmerer

In other words, you can’t support your claims. Got it.

          • Jurg Bangerter

the krauts in Germany as well don’t appreciate GMO products, must be that the US krauts are more stupid then their Europeans cousins..lol…

          • Kurt Kemmerer

Well, the “kraut” scientists in Germany certainly seem to be seeing GMOs as being safe and beneficial. Hmm.

            GMO corn
producer charged with animal deaths in Germany.

Syngenta has been criminally charged for denying knowledge that its GM Bt corn actually kills livestock. What’s more is not only did the company deny this
fact, but they did so in a civil court case that ended back in 2007. The
charges were finally issued after a long legal struggle against the mega corp
initiated by a German farmer named Gottfried Gloeckner whose dairy
cattle died after eating the Bt toxin and coming down with a ‘mysterious’
illness.” Glyphosate-laden crops, no matter if they
are corn, soy, sugar beets, or any other GMO crop, have also been linked to
thousands of farmer deaths in places like Sri Lanka. And even in countries that have refused GMO corn, it
has contaminated food crops and therefore multiple foods that people
unsuspectingly purchase at their local markets. As much as 80% of ‘safe’ foods
can be contaminated with this toxic chemical – used abundantly on GM crops.
Glyphosate also contaminates human red blood cells, causing irrevocable damage.

          • Kurt Kemmerer

Links to peer reviewed studies that support these baseless claims are needed.

          • Jurg Bangerter

…just seeing ZDF German TV documentry about the death of million of Bees in Gemrany I am thinking you are mis-imfored about the Krauts, the German also have made it mandatory to lable all GMO products and you know that having GMO’s in a product is a killer and nobody buys GMO crap in Deutschland..

          • Kurt Kemmerer

Documentaries are not science, and they are often bad propaganda. You have a bad case of confirmation bias, and you choose to ignore the science wholeheartedly. Your ignorance is astounding for someone who pretends otherwise.

          • hyperzombie

How could a million bees die in Germany from GMOs if they dont grow any???? Hmmm.

          • Frank

Is all you do go around the web spreading misinformation on GMO’s? Guess what, I’m now going to correct you every where I see you.

Bans on GE crops have always been implemented by politicians, for political reasons, against the advice of scientists. The question put to you was about science bodies in the EU, not political bans in the non EU Russia.

If consumers want the choice they can seek out certified Organic, rather than force extra costs and regulation on everyone else, that is intelligent enough to understand the science – by the way, as most votes on the subject have failed to get a majority, I don’t think it is accurate for you to say customers want it.

All studies that show organic to have a bigger yield ignore the fact organic requires a great deal more space for that yield. On a like for like basis, organic yields are 34% lower.

Age has caused the increase in cancer. Although, you are right, people living longer is down to GE crops, and the fact that means they have an increased food supply – if you wish to twist “GE increases life span” to “GE causes cancer” that is up to you. Forgive us if we call you insane for holding such a belief though.

The poorly educated science community? They are the ones against labelling – scientists.

There is no science behind your GMO crap.

      • Jeremy Rawley

Labeling GE foods does nothing but promote fear and distract from the real issues. You just want to scare people away from bioengineered foods so you can push your purist non-GE agenda. In other words, bullying. Anti-GE is a religion just like keeping kosher, halal, beef-free, vegetarian, etc. You just worship food and chemophobia instead of an ancient book written by ignorant savages.

        “Monsanto=FDA CEO (sic)”

Oh look, someone found a list of people who had private sector jobs before working in government! How is it automatically evil? When did it become a crime to change jobs?

        • Jurg Bangerter

Jeremy Rawley; GMO labeling is only informing the CITIZEN=customer and is letting him making choices, the state or the electd goverment have no constitutionlal rights to NOT INFORM US ABOUT WHATS INSIDE FOOD nor has the Food industry been just nor honest, mislabeling artificial products as natural is a very common criminal behaviour.from the fodd industry…Vermonts parliament and citizens have voted to make GMO labeling mandatory, THE SOUVERAIN IN A DEMOCRAIC SOCIETY HAS SPOKE TROUGH THE BALLOTS..THE SOUVERAIN AT NO MOMENT CAN BE PUT UNDER TITORSHIP OF CORPORATIONS OR THE GOVERMENT….European countries all have mandatory GMO labeling…you never could argue with me about this your explanations are worhtless crap defneding the undefendable.

          • Jeremy Rawley

“THE SOUVERAIN IN A DEMOCRAIC (sic) SOCIETY”

Aside from the fact that you don’t know how to spell “sovereign” or “democracy”, do you seriously think America is a democracy? We’re not! We’re a constitutional republic! There is a world of difference between a democracy and a republic. A democracy is governed by a majority. A republic is governed by law. The United States is founded on the rule of law, not that of men, and our Constitution is the supreme law of the land–the Queen Mum of all laws. The rule of law states that science trumps knee-jerk paranoia over the big bad Gee-Em-Ohs as per the science and useful arts clause of the Constitution (Article I, Section 8).

          • Jurg Bangerter

English ist the bastard of French and German, so the word dent de lion became dandelion and souverain became sovereign, vaisseau became vessel etc. so much about your education, still the French words can be used in english since they were correct one for 300 years in England under the French d’Anjou kings or Angevins, even the Tudors were of Valois descent so much about history…every country has a constitution and USA is a representative republic which allows you to vote all 4 years for a MP which then decides on your behalf and often against your interests.A direct democracy citizen votes 4 times a year on 3 goverment levels and approves laws, budgets, new fighter planes and less or more taxes….In a represantive republic 1% or super rich owes 90% of the wealth…a direct democracy is global wealth and innovation leader and number one country what quality of life and equality mean…way to go Jeremy..or ask your education money back…

          • Jeremy Rawley

“European countries all have mandatory GMO labeling”

There are countries where homosexuality is banned. Does that mean gays are evil? Just because some retard politician bans something doesn’t mean they know what the hell they’re talking about. You just used a bandwagon fallacy. Try again, Jurg.

          • Jurg Bangerter

Western European countries have accepted Gay marriages long before USA and Canada.Women and Hebrew descent presidents such as Ruth Dreyfuss were elected already in the 80’s also the Swiss farm lobby and science community launched an vote against GMO planting in the 90’s.Switzerland is global wealth and innovation leader and A.Einstein gave up his german citizenship to become Swiss in a time Canada and USA closed their borders to all Jewish refugees sending vessels full of Jews back to Auschwitz. We never treated Blacks and Natives as badly as North-Americans and never comitted atrocities such as the genocide against natives.

      • Jeremy Rawley

Do you know how stupid you sound when you claim there’s some conspiracy among Monsanto and the U.S. government to poison our food while undercutting other seed companies? You have to be retarded to seriously believe that any business, agricultural or otherwise, would actively want to harm its own customer base. Can you name one company that profited this way? Go on, I’ll wait. And where do people get the idea that scientists are bought off? Do you have any clue how many people Monsanto would have to bribe? They’d go bankrupt bribing every scientist, politician, and business leader they can to falsify the safety record of GE foods! We’re talking whole scientific disciplines, industries, and governments here. If oil companies can’t bribe climate scientists to turn a blind eye to anthropogenic climate change, what chance do you have of Monsanto succeeding at a conspiracy? It’s far more likely for the Nazis to have burned down the Reichstag building than for Monsanto to control the agriculture industry with government aid. Committing arson against a government building only requires a handful of men and minimal money while a “Big Ag” conspiracy requires tens of thousands of people, if not more, and would be far too costly to pull off. And who benefits? The Nazis at least had the incentive of being able to blame the Communists, and they couldn’t have had a better plan. What does Monsanto have to gain by knowingly harming their own customer base or selling sterile seeds? Unless they start making seeds that sprout Austrian cyborgs, you’re shit out of luck if you want Terminator seeds.

Monsanto wouldn’t gain permanent customers this way because buying new seed every year isn’t anything new. Farmers have done this for decades. This is especially true of corn farmers, who’ve grown almost nothing but commercial hybrids for more than 50 years. Why? If you replant seeds from hybrids, you just get a mix of inferior varieties. Monsanto’s not even the only company that doesn’t let you reuse your seeds. This is standard practice with many seed companies, and since most farmers just buy new seed every year, it’s not an issue. If you want to save your seeds so much, DON’T BUY SEEDS FROM MONSANTO AND DON’T SIGN A CONTRACT SAYING YOU WON’T DO IT! Nobody’s holding a gun to your head to buy Monsanto’s seeds, GE or otherwise. Just buy your seeds from some other company that’ll let you reuse them! It’s not hard to do!

What studies do you have demonstrating GE crops to be harmful? Can you cite a single study vindicating this? YouTube videos, Vani “Food Babe” Hari’s blog, Mercola.com, “Dr.” Oz, and anything with “natural” in the title do not count.

        “Monsanto=FDA (sic)”
What’s the problem with government workers having private sector jobs prior to starting their current ones? Is it a crime to change jobs?

        • hyperzombie

+ 75 for my second favorite Jeremy rant, I gave you 100 for the most awesome Agent Orange rant,,,that one was EPIC.

      • Jeremy Rawley

To put a weary canard to bed, genetically engineered foods and Agent Orange are not comparable. They’re not even in the same league.

First of all, Monsanto had nothing to do with creating Agent Orange. They only manufactured it. The U.S. Army gave them the formula. Monsanto did not claim it was safe. As early as 1952, they warned Congress AGAINST using it because of dioxin contamination which resulted from mixing the safe 2,4-D with 2,5-T. What did the Feds do? Ignore Monsanto’s advice and use Agent Orange in Korea and Vietnam anyway!

Source: Schuck, Peter H., Agent Orange on Trial: Mass Toxic Disasters in the Courts, p. 17, Harvard University Press, 1986
        http://books.google.com/books?id=waTdqLYCyPMC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false

Second, Monsanto wasn’t even the only company that made Agent Orange. Dow, Uniroyal, Hercules, Thompson Chemicals, Diamond Shamrock, and T-H Agriculture & Nutrition Co. all manufactured it, too. Why single out Monsanto?

Claiming that GE foods are evil because Monsanto made Agent Orange is as insane and intellectually retarded as claiming Ziploc bags are evil because Dow made Agent Orange, health insurance is evil because Aetna had ties to slavery, or coffeemakers are evil because Krupps once made tanks. These are not the only big businesses with shady pasts. Volkswagen was founded by the Nazis. Mazda made rifles and Nissan airplanes, automobiles, and engines for Japan’s military during World War II. The Imperial Japanese military used Mitsubishi’s Zero fighters against Allied troops. At least one Japanese soldier or politician, including but not limited to one or more war criminals “honored” at Yasukuni Shrine, used Nintendo’s playing cards in wartime card games. IBM’s Hollerith tracking system was used at Auschwitz. Siemens and Kodak used Holocaust labor in production. BMW made plane engines for the Luftwaffe. Bayer made Zyklon B while helping Josef Mengele with his inhumane experiments. Chase helped the Nazis by freezing the bank accounts of Jews. Last but definitely not least, Nazi Germany killed millions of Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, LBGT people, cripples, and others who didn’t fit Hitler’s fucked-up ideal while Imperial Japan killed millions of Koreans, Chinese, Malays, Filipinos, East Indians, Indonesians, and Pacific Islanders.

These atrocities were the acts of governments and militaries. None of this makes the companies’ products bad. It doesn’t mean all Germans and Japanese are terrible people, nor that you should stop using Ziploc bags, GE seeds, coffeemakers, or health insurance. It doesn’t mean your VW Beetle, BMW X5, Mitsubishi Lancer, Mazda Miata, or Nissan Altima will explode. It doesn’t mean your Siemens fire alarm or Kodak camera will gas you to death. It doesn’t mean your aspirin is secretly designed to murder you. It doesn’t mean your Wii U is going to force Chinese and Korean women into sex slavery. Yet the people crying about Monsanto being evil fail to understand that 1) the Monsanto of Agent Orange and the Monsanto of agriculture are two different companies; 2) Pfizer has long since bought the Monsanto company that made Agent Orange; and 3) probably everyone who had a hand in developing and selling Agent Orange is dead–from old age, not Agent Orange poisoning. Anti-biotech cranks don’t want to find the truth in context. They want to make a laundry list of decontextualized tragedies so they can smear anything Monsanto produces.

the Monsanto Pro GMO troll machine is in Full Power, so a compagny prdoucing deadly toxins such as Agent Orange which were told to US soldiers weren’t harmful is now doing the exactly same with pesticides and GMO crap…Jeremy Schwarcz or hatever your name I see the nsanto troll machine is still defending the undefendable…loser

    Dr. Joe
Schwarcz of Montreal’s McGill University is a well-known media
“popularizer(clown) of science,” and clearly on someone’s payroll.

Whose: A consortium of biotechnology companies, including Monsanto.

In That’s The Way The Cookie Crumbles, Dr. Schwarcz writes that aspartame is
perfectly safe to consume – a verdict contradicted by scores of independent
studies, one that only the insane could endorse.

Frightening to consider that Dr. Schwarcz – a paid public diplomat for Monsanto – “interprets science” for the
    public.

Dr. Schwarzc has stalked and libelled anti-aspartame activists, smeared GM opponent/canola farmer Percy
Schmeiser. Once, his name was mentioned on his radio show, he screamed. Maybe
he was off his Xanax …

Dr. Joe Schwarcz – A 21st century Mr. Wizard – is making his fans sick.

          • Avery

You still have not cited a single study…

          • Jurg Bangerter

            A number of scientists worldwide
have clearly outlined the potential dangers associated with consuming GMOs.
            Recently published article titled “10
Scientific Studies Proving GMOs Can Be Harmful To Human Health,” which you
can read in ful. These are just a
select few out of hundreds of studies that are now available in the public
domain, it seems that they continue to surface year after year.

            Russia completely banning
GMOs, such a large, developed nation is a big step forward in creating more
awareness with regards to GMOs. Ask yourself, why have so many nations banned
GMOs and the pesticides that go with them? It’s because evidence points to the
fact that they are not safe, they are young, and we just don’t know enough
about them to safely consume them. They just aren’t necessary, so why produce
            them?

            Within the past few years,
awareness regarding GMOs has skyrocketed. Activism has played a large role in
waking up a large portion of Earths population with regards to GMOs. People are
starting to ask questions and seek answers. In doing so, we are all coming to
the same conclusion as Russia recently came to.

            In February, the State Duma
introduced a bill banning the cultivation of GMO food products. President Putin
ordered that Russian citizens be protected from GMOs. The States
Agricultural Committee has supported the ban recommendation from the
Russian parliament, and the resolution will come into full effect in July 2014.

This just goes to show what we
can do when we come together and demand change and share information on a
global scale. Change is happening, and we are waking up to new concepts of our
reality every day. GMOs are only the beginning, we have many things to rid our
planet of that do not resonate with us and are clearly unnecessary. We are all
starting to see through the false justifications for the necessity of GMOs, no
longer are we so easily persuaded, no longer do we believe everything we hear
and everything we’re presented with. Lets keep it going!

          • Frank

Research shows them safe. A recently published click-bait article does not change that fact.

A political ban does not change the science.

Only the easily duped are coming to that conclusion. Those of us with a functioning brain and a knowledge of science are making it our mission to make sure we drown out the idiots.

Your change is political. Not scientific

Cancer death rates are twice as high where GM crops
            and agricultural chemicals are used

By David Gutierrez | Natural News –Cancer has skyrocketed

Agricultural regions that see a heavy use of chemicals
and in which genetically modified (GM) crops are grown have a cancer death rate
twice as high as the national average, according to a report by the Ministry of
Health of Cordoba Province in Argentina.

“Once again, what we have complained about for years
was confirmed,” said Medardo Avila Vazquez of the University Network for Environment
and Health (Reduas), “and especially what
doctors say about the sprayed towns and areas affected by industrial
agriculture. Cancer cases are multiplying as never before in areas with massive
            use of pesticides.”

The Provincial Tumour Registry and the Department of
Statistics and Census analyzed data on cancer tumors and death rates between
the years of 2004 and 2009. The report found that the highest rate of cancer
deaths occurred in the area known as “pampa gringa,”
which also has the heaviest use of agrochemicals
            and GM crops.

According to the World Health Organization’s
International Agency for Research on Cancer, Argentina’s cancer death rate is
115.13 per 100,000. Yet, the Cordoba report found that the average cancer death
rate for the province was significantly higher, at 134.8 in the capital city of
Cordoba and 158 in the province as a whole. When the departments in the pampa gringa were examined separately, the rate shot up
even higher: 216.8 in San Justo, 217.4 in Union, 228.4 in Presidente Roque Saenz Pena and 229.8 in Marcos Juarez.

The report was taken as vindication by Cordoba
residents and public health advocates, who have been warning of climbing cancer rates in the province for years.

“The study of Cordoba matches the surveys we conducted
in 18 industrial agriculture areas. Cancer has skyrocketed in the last 15
years,” said doctor and researcher Damian Verzenassi
of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Rosario.

            Experts demand government action

            Yet, the
            government report itself actually deemphasized
the finding of exceptionally high rates of cancer deaths in agricultural areas. Instead, the report
focused on analyzing cancer incidences (new cases) by age, sex and location,
and comparing incidence rates with those rates in other countries.

            However,
health advocates immediately drew the connection with agricultural chemicals and demanded government action to protect the public.

            According
to Fernando Manas of the National
University of Rio Cuarto, “there is
evidence of high levels of genetic damage in people of Marcos Juarez, which may
result from unintentional exposure to pesticides.”

            Manas
noted that, for example, lakes, soils and rainwater in the Marcos Juarez
department have been found to be contaminated with the herbicide glyphosate (“Roundup”) and one of its breakdown
products, AMPA. Over the past eight years,
researchers at Rio Cuarto have published 15
separate papers confirming that Cordoba residents who have been exposed to
pesticides suffer from genetic damage and a higher risk of cancer.

Verzenassi condemned efforts by the government and industry to obscure the
            connection between agrochemicals and cancer.

            “They
keep demanding studies on something that is already proven and do not take
urgent measures to protect the population,” he said. “There is ample evidence
that the agricultural model has health consequences, we are talking about a
production model that is a huge public health problem.”

            Another
researcher, Avila Vazquez of the University
Network for Environment and Health, echoed this criticism and called for the
immediate implementation of measures to prohibit aerial spraying, keep chemical
applications at least one km from homes and ban agrochemical
storage and spraying from urban areas.

            “The
tobacco companies denied the link between smoking and cancer, and took decades
to recognize the truth,” Vazquez said. “The
            biotech and agrochemical corporations are
the same as the tobacco industry, they lie and favor business over the health
            of the population.”

The report was taken as vindication by Cordoba, Argentina
residents and public health advocates, who have been warning of climbing cancer rates in the province for years.

“The study of Cordoba matches the surveys we conducted
in 18 industrial agriculture areas. Cancer has skyrocketed in the last 15
years,” said doctor and researcher Damian Verzenassi
of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Rosario.

    Experts demand government action

    Yet, the
    government report itself actually deemphasized
the finding of exceptionally high rates of cancer deaths in agricultural areas. Instead, the report
focused on analyzing cancer incidences (new cases) by age, sex and location,
and comparing incidence rates with those rates in other countries.

    However,
health advocates immediately drew the connection with agricultural chemicals and demanded government action to protect the public.

    According
to Fernando Manas of the National
University of Rio Cuarto, “there is
evidence of high levels of genetic damage in people of Marcos Juarez, which may
result from unintentional exposure to pesticides.”

    Manas

GMO crops in the U.S. have failed
miserably to increase yields, perform in drought situations or tame pesky weeds
and pests. The Union of Concerned Scientists, in their report, “Failure to
Yield: Evaluating the Performance of Genetically Engineered Crops,” found that
    yields of corn and soy have not increased any more than conventional crops;
there is an advantage of only 3-4 percent in insect resistance; and, by
comparison, non-GMO crops have increased yields of 13-25 percent.

But that doesn’t keep U.S. officials
from the commitment to the biotech industry, to forcing GMOs down the
collective throat of European nations at every opportunity through threats, law
suits, and underhanded activities, even though Europeans, through the
individual nation states, continue to vigorously reject and resist them.

    Craig Roberts Stapleton, U.S. Ambassador
to France from 2005 to 2009, worked to promote the agenda of Monsanto and other
biotechnology companies during the George Bush, Jr., administration— both by
force and “retaliation.” The cable revealed the following correspondence
between Stapleton and the White House regarding GMO acceptance.

AUSTRIA proved reduction of fertility by GMO’s.Since 1999
Austria has banned GMO maize and rapeseed used to make canola oil. The EU
Commission, the governing body of the EU, has tried to overrule this ban but EU
member states have twice backed the Austrians, and the country remains a
GMO-free zone. Austria released a report on three studies claiming that
Monsanto corn reduces fertility, but Monsanto has long arms. Under pressure,
    the government withdrew the studies.19

Rapeseed used to make canola oil is called CANOLA. Rape and Canola are not the same plant, they look similar but they are not the same.
Austria bans GMOs……Hilarious what do they have 5 farms in the country? there are probably farms in Canada that are bigger that the arable land in Austria.

Political bans do not equate to evidence of harm

Jeremy Rawley, PHD Joe Schwarcz and all other Aspartameand GMOn defenders; GMO labeling is only informing the CITIZEN=customer and is letting him making choices, the state or the electd goverment have no constitutionlal rights to NOT INFORM US ABOUT WHATS INSIDE FOOD nor has the Food industry been just nor honest, mislabeling artificial products as natural is a very common criminal behaviour.from the fodd industry…Vermonts parliament and citizens have voted to make GMO labeling mandatory, THE SOUVERAIN IN A DEMOCRAIC SOCIETY HAS SPOKE TROUGH THE BALLOTS..THE SOUVERAIN AT NO MOMENT CAN BE PUT UNDER TITORSHIP OF CORPORATIONS OR THE GOVERMENT….European countries all have mandatory GMO labeling…you never could really argue with me about this, your explanations are worhtless crap defending the undefendable.undemocratic system of a govemrent owned by Corporations–USA/Canada need to nationalize its goverments.

    • Frank

If the consumer is anything like you, they lack the education to be able to make an informed decision and so labelling is pointless. If they have the education to understand GE crops, then they know they are safe and thus labelling is unnecessary.
Either way labelling (democratically opposed, by the way) is unnecessary.

        Monsanto
Tries to Patent & Control Natural, Non-GMO Tomatoes

        In an
appalling attempt to patent yet another seed, Monsanto has resorted to fraud to
try to gain rights to a tomato which contains a naturally occurring resistance
to a fungal disease called botrytis. The tomato is not genetically
modified, but Monsanto manipulated documents to make the plant look ‘invented’ by biotech when the plant’s true maker is Mother Nature, herself.

        Representatives
of No Patents on Seeds! have called attention to this shady play of the
biotech industry to try to outrun their failing genetic experiments. The
original tomatoes used for this patent came from the international gene bank in
Gatersleben, Germany, and they have shown this resistance for ages, well before
biotech started monkeying with our food supply.

        “Because
crossing tomatoes is not patentable, Monsanto deliberately rephrased the patent
during the period of examination to make it appear as if genetic
engineering was involved. However, careful reading of the patent shows that
this is simply fraudulent. These tomatoes were not produced by transferring
isolated DNA. The European Patent Office should have picked up on this,” says
Christoph Then for No Patents on Seeds!. “This patent shows just how easy it is
for companies like Monsanto to avoid existing prohibitions in patent law.”

Kurt Kummer;Do the Swiss with the highest Nobel Prize per capita sound crazy as well such as the Italians? Perhabs uneducated since only in USA/Canada people believe man and dinosaur lived in harmony, the Swiss don’t go for such religious BS? Switzerland is also Global Wealth and Innovation leader and has banned all GMO’s on its territory by democratic vote….also it has been proven organic Yield is now bigger then GMO crap who loads you with toxins and pollutes with pesticides.

    • Kurt Kemmerer

It’s interesting that you cannot support any of your claims with actual science. Why is that?

    • Frank

Deary me Jurg. It was pointed out to you a month ago that organic yield compared like for like is 34% lower (it also uses more pesticides, but we’ll ignore that for now).
And democratic vote is not scientific evidence. Please, Jurg, provide the evidence of the harm you claim.

I’ve seen quite a few articles by Christina Sarich. She is not a credible source. She frequently gets the fundamentals of plant biology wrong and just as frequently grossly misrepresents information to further her argument (albeit fallaciously so). In short, she is either grossly incompetent or out an outright liar.

    “Because
    crossing tomatoes is not patentable,

It sure is, as long as you have a distinct trait. This has been going on since the 1930s. The plant patent act was passed in 1932.
