OR Senator Jeff Merkley: ‘GM salmon is too risky’

(Summary)

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) has spoken out against genetically modified salmon, which the Food and Drug Administration is considering approving for market release, the Daily Kos reported. He is urging voters to sign a petition “to tell the FDA that GMO salmon is too risky.” The GM salmon, which contains a gene from the Chinook salmon that allows it to grow larger, faster. AquaBounty, the biotech company that developed the salmon, insists that all the GM salmon are sterile and if released in the wild, would not affect local populations. Despite the reassurances, Senator Merkley wrote that the salmon could be harmful to the environment and “may also increase human exposure to growth hormones, anti-microbial drugs, and disease.”
