Texas boy discovers dinosaur fossil near shopping mall

Sometimes, big discoveries are made in the most unlikely circumstances. A 5-year-old boy in Mansfield, Texas has now become a hero excavator after he uncovered the 100-million-year-old remains of a dinosaur near a shopping mall. The bones belong to a nodosaur, a kind of spiky-backed reptile that was roughly the size of a pony.

The boy, Wiley, and his father made the discovery while digging under a plot of land set to become a parking lot. Now, scientists want to know if more Jurassic remains can be found hidden nearby, and a major excavation effort is underway. It just goes to show, the relics of life’s ancient history can be seen all around us, and just beneath our feet.
